Umrah visa check Nusuk permit registration Saudi Arabia

Umrah Visa Check KSA: Why a Valid Visa Is Not Enough?

Holding an eligible visa does not let you perform Umrah on its own. Nusuk registration is mandatory for every pilgrim in 2026, regardless of visa type, including tourist eVisa holders. Without a confirmed Nusuk permit, entry to Makkah for Umrah is not permitted even with a valid visa.

Do This Next:

  1. Confirm your visa type permits Umrah first
  2. Register on Nusuk regardless, since this step is separate and mandatory
  3. Book accommodation through Nusuk before applying for your permit

The Misconception This Topic Runs Into

Most confusion here traces back to one incorrect assumption.

Many visa types, including the tourist eVisa, already permit Umrah as an activity. That fact does not mean registration ends there.

Nusuk registration is mandatory for all Umrah pilgrims, regardless of visa type. A tourist eVisa holder without a confirmed Nusuk-linked permit cannot enter Makkah for Umrah. This holds even though the visa itself is valid.

Who Can Apply Directly Through Nusuk

Direct access depends on your existing visa status, not simply on being Muslim and wanting to perform Umrah.

Travellers from eVisa-eligible or visa-exempt countries can apply directly through Nusuk.sa. This includes the UK, US, EU nations, GCC states, and Malaysia. Nationals of countries outside this group, India being a commonly cited example, cannot apply directly.

Pilgrims in that second group must instead go through a licensed Umrah travel agent authorised by Saudi authorities. Direct self-service through Nusuk simply is not offered to them at this stage.

How to Register on Nusuk?

The setup process is the same across eligible nationalities, done once per pilgrim.

  1. Download the Nusuk app from the App Store or Google Play
  2. Select Register New User, then choose Visitor
  3. Enter your passport or border number, visa details, date of birth, mobile number, and email
  4. Verify through the OTP code sent to your phone

Verification typically takes 24 to 48 hours, longer during peak season. Use the same phone number and email you used on your original visa application to avoid a mismatch.

Accommodation Booking Is Now Part of the Requirement

This step catches people who assume hotel booking is a separate, optional convenience.

Since mid-2025, booking accommodation through the Nusuk Masar feature has been mandatory for eligible pilgrims. This must happen before an Umrah permit can be issued. This is a prerequisite, not an add-on you arrange afterward.

Checking Your Status

Three official channels confirm status, depending on how you applied.

The MOFA Visa Platform at visa.mofa.gov.sa handles visas submitted through travel agents or Saudi missions abroad. The Nusuk app itself shows your permit and booking status directly. The KSA Visa Portal at ksavisa.sa also supports status checks and is increasingly referenced as a unified access point.

Pro Tip: Save your Nusuk login details somewhere secure well before travel. Losing access mid-trip, particularly during peak season when re-verification is slower, can disrupt permit bookings you still need to make.

The Separate Rawdah Permit

This trips up first-time pilgrims specifically, since it feels like a second application after already completing the first.

Al Rawdah, the sacred area inside the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, needs its own booking inside the Nusuk app. This replaces the older Eatmarna app, which is no longer active.

Inside Nusuk, go to Prophet’s Mosque Services, then Noble Rawdah, to reserve a slot. If no slots show as available, try again right after the minute mark, such as :01 or :31. This sometimes reveals newly released capacity.

Umrah Visa Issuance Pauses Each Year

This seasonal pattern catches travellers planning around fixed dates without checking first.

Umrah visa issuance pauses ahead of Hajj season and resumes afterward. For the 1448 AH season, issuance resumed on 31 May 2026, with pilgrim entry to Makkah beginning 1 June 2026.

Confirm the current season’s status before finalising travel dates, particularly if your trip falls close to Hajj.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a separate Umrah visa if my tourist visa already allows Umrah?

You do not need a separate visa, but you do need separate Nusuk registration. This applies regardless of visa type, including the tourist eVisa, whose scope is covered in the Saudi tourist visa guide.

Can Indian pilgrims apply for Umrah directly through Nusuk?

No, Indian passport holders currently must apply through a licensed Umrah travel agent instead. Direct Nusuk self-service is limited to eVisa-eligible and visa-exempt nationalities.

Is hotel booking required before getting a Nusuk Umrah permit?

Yes, since mid-2025 this has been mandatory for eligible pilgrims. Booking accommodation through Nusuk Masar is a prerequisite, not something arranged afterward.

Do I need a separate booking to visit Al Rawdah?

Yes, Al Rawdah access requires its own reservation inside the Nusuk app under Prophet’s Mosque Services. This is separate from your main Umrah permit.

Final Thoughts

The single most important habit here is treating Nusuk as mandatory regardless of what your visa already permits. A valid visa answers only the entry question, not the pilgrimage-permit question underneath it. Which visas permit Umrah in the first place is set out in the Saudi visa types guide.

Register early, book accommodation through the required channel, and reserve Rawdah access as its own step. One application does not cover everything.
