Absher Registration: Creating and Activating Your Account
Absher registration and activation are two separate steps. You can create an account online in minutes, but most services stay locked until you activate it separately. Activation happens through Nafath, a self-service kiosk, some bank channels, or a Jawazat office.
Do This Next:
- Confirm your Saudi mobile number is registered in your own name
- Register online at absher.sa under Individuals
- Activate separately, using a kiosk if you have no bank account yet
The Two-Step Structure Most Guides Skip
This trips up nearly every first-time user, so it is worth stating before anything else.
Registration creates the account. Activation unlocks it. These are separate processes, and completing the first does not complete the second.
An unactivated account exists but cannot do much. Activation verifies the account genuinely belongs to you, which is why it usually requires fingerprints or a verified bank identity.
Who Can Register on Absher?
Eligibility is broader than many older guides suggest.
All Iqama holders can register, including dependents of expats. Jawazat also extended registration to GCC nationals and visit visa holders.
Visitors use a different identifier. Expats enter their Iqama number, while visitors enter their border number instead.
What to Have Ready Before You Start for Absher Registration?
Gathering four things first prevents the most common restarts.
- Your Iqama or border number, exactly as printed on the document
- A Saudi mobile number registered in your own name
- An email address you can open immediately
- A username and password meeting the rules below
The form times out if you pause to hunt for details. Having everything to hand keeps registration under five minutes.
Choosing Credentials That Will Be Accepted
Absher enforces stricter password rules than most platforms.
Your password needs at least eight characters, including uppercase, lowercase, and a number. It cannot reuse a substantial portion of your username.
It also cannot lean too heavily on one repeated character. A password built around your own user ID is the most common rejection.
Full rules and recovery steps sit in the Absher password reset guide.
Step One: Creating the Account on Absher
The online registration itself takes only a few minutes.
- Go to absher.sa and select Individuals
- Switch the language to English
- Click New User?
- Enter your ID number, either Iqama or border number
- Enter your Saudi mobile number
- Choose a username in English, a password, and enter your email
- Enter the image code and accept the terms
- Enter the verification code sent by SMS
Your account now exists. It is not yet fully usable.
Step Two: Four Ways to Activate
Pick the method that matches your situation, since not all four are available to everyone.
| Method | Best For | Speed |
|---|---|---|
| Nafath app | Anyone with an active Saudi bank account | Around 10 minutes, from home |
| Self-service kiosk | New arrivals with no bank account yet | 3 to 5 minutes, in person |
| Bank ATM or online banking | Existing customers of participating banks | Varies by bank |
| Jawazat office | Anyone preferring in-person help | Appointment required, no fee |

You Do Not Need Nafath to Activate
This matters enormously for new arrivals, and most guides present Nafath as the only modern route.
Nafath depends on your identity being verified through a Saudi bank. New residents who have just received their Iqama often have no bank account yet, which makes that route unavailable.
The self-service kiosk path requires no Nafath and no bank account. It verifies you by fingerprint instead, which is why it works when digital routes do not.
- Find a nearby Absher self-service machine
- Tap the screen and select English
- Enter your Iqama or ID number
- Scan both index fingers on the reader
- Enter your registered mobile number
- Enter the OTP sent by SMS
Over 420 of these machines operate across the Kingdom. Locations and services are covered in the Absher self-service machines guide.
Pro Tip: Just arrived with no bank account? Go straight to a kiosk rather than attempting Nafath first. The bank-dependent route simply will not work yet.
What to Check First Once Active
Three quick checks are worth running immediately after activation.
Confirm your Iqama expiry date displays correctly, since a mismatch signals a records problem worth catching early. Check that your registered mobile number is the one you actually use daily.
Then review your dependents list if you sponsor family members. Errors here are far easier to fix now than during an urgent renewal deadline later on.
Why Registration Usually Fails?
One cause dominates all others, and it is easy to check before you start.
Your Saudi mobile number must be registered in your own name. A number registered to your employer, a friend, or a previous holder will block registration entirely. To see which SIMs are actually registered in your name, use the CST Argami SIM check.
Other common causes include a mismatch between your entered ID number and official records. Registering before your Iqama record is fully active also fails.
What Absher Activation Unlocks?
Once active, the account covers most routine government tasks a resident needs.
Iqama renewal, expiry checks, exit and re-entry visas, and traffic violation payment all become available. So do dependent management and Jawazat appointment booking. The full scope sits in the Absher guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is registering for Absher the same as activating it?
No, these are two separate steps. Registration creates the account online, while activation verifies your identity and unlocks most services.
Can I create an Absher account without Nafath?
Yes, a self-service kiosk activates your account using fingerprints instead. This route needs no Nafath app and no bank account.
Can visit visa holders register on Absher?
Yes, Jawazat extended registration to visit visa holders and GCC nationals. Visitors enter their border number rather than an Iqama number.
Why does my Absher registration keep failing?
The most common cause is a Saudi mobile number not registered in your own name. Numbers registered to an employer or another person will not work.
Final Thoughts
The single detail worth remembering is that finishing registration does not mean finishing setup. An account that exists but sits unactivated causes the confusion behind most “Absher is not working” complaints.
If you have just arrived in the Kingdom, plan on a kiosk visit. Do not assume a fully digital path will work. The fingerprint route exists precisely because bank-dependent verification is not available to everyone.
