A Saudi Arabia postal code is a five digit number issued by Saudi Post (SPL). It identifies a district or residential community. Riyadh commonly uses 12271, Jeddah 22233, Makkah 24231 and Dammam 34223. Every building also carries a four digit additional number, and the two together form a nine digit National Address code.

How a Saudi Postal Code Is Built?
Most guides publish a list of numbers and stop there. The five digits follow a documented structure. Once you know it, you can sanity check any code you are given.
Saudi Post assigns a unique National Address to every residential and commercial location in the Kingdom. The five digit postal code sits at the centre of that system. Reading left to right, each group of digits narrows the geography.
The first digit is the region
| First digit | Region covered |
|---|---|
| 1 | Riyadh Province |
| 2 | Makkah Province, including Jeddah, Makkah and Taif |
| 3 | Eastern Province |
| 4 | Madinah Province and Tabuk Province |
| 5 | Qassim Province and Hail Province |
| 6 | Asir, Najran and Al Baha |
| 7 | Northern Borders Province and Al Jouf Province |
| 8 | Jazan Province |

The second and third digits are the post office
Digits two and three together identify the main post office serving that area. This is why Jeddah codes cluster in the 22 and 23 bands, while Taif sits in the 26 band.
Both begin with 2 because they share a province. They route through different post offices.
The last two digits are the postal zone
The final pair identifies an individual post office or a postal zone inside that city. These are the digits that change from one neighbourhood to the next.
Sanity check any code in five seconds
The first digit is tied to a postal region. A code landing in the wrong part of the country is usually a copying error. This test catches most of them.
Yanbu sits in Madinah Province, so a genuine Yanbu code should begin with 4. Several websites publish 30799 instead.
That code begins with 3, which points to the Eastern Province on the opposite coast. Yanbu’s own code is 42955.
The nine towns that break the pattern
Digits two and three identify the post office serving an area. A post office can serve across a provincial boundary, so nine towns below carry a neighbouring region’s code.
Muhayil Asir and Al Majardah sit on the Tihama coastal plain and route through the Makkah sector. Both carry 28xxx codes despite being in Asir.
Five Al Baha towns do the same, because the province sits on the escarpment between Taif and Al Qunfudhah. Sharurah and Habuna in Najran Province are the last two. Their codes reflect the post offices that have long served them.
These are not errors. If a form rejects one of them, check the National Address service before assuming the code is wrong.
Pro tip: Send the word Hello on WhatsApp to the Saudi Post virtual assistant on +966 11 289 8888, then reply with option 4. It returns your full National Address, including your postal code and Short Address, without opening an app or logging in.
Why the Same City Shows Two Different Postal Codes?
This is the single biggest source of confusion. It explains why two reputable websites give different answers for the same city.
Saudi Arabia runs two layers of postal code that both remain valid today.
The older layer dates from the era when almost all mail went to a PO Box. These are the codes you still see printed on company letterheads, international shipping forms and older government documents. Riyadh appears as 11564 or 11461, Jeddah as 21577 or 21442, and Al Khobar as 31952.
The newer layer belongs to the National Address system. It maps codes to physical districts rather than to post office boxes. Here Riyadh appears in the 12xxx to 14xxx bands, Jeddah in 22xxx and 23xxx, and Dammam in 32xxx to 34xxx.
| If the form asks for | Use this |
|---|---|
| A PO Box address | The older PO Box era code for that city |
| A delivery or residential address | Your National Address district code |
| A National Address registration | Your district code, taken from Absher or Tawakkalna |
| An international shipping label | Your district code, plus your Short Address |
Neither layer is obsolete. A PO Box uses the postal code of the branch holding the box. That is why the older numbers survive.
Postal Code, Building Number, Additional Number, Unit Number and Short Address
A Saudi National Address contains several numbers that look similar and get mixed up constantly. Thousands of people each month search for the unit number or additional number in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam. That volume shows how routinely forms confuse them.
| Component | Arabic | Digits | What it identifies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Postal code | الرمز البريدي | 5 | The district or residential community |
| Building number | رقم المبنى | 4 | The specific building on its street |
| Additional number | الرقم الإضافي | 4 | Coordinates that pinpoint the building |
| Unit number | رقم الوحدة | Varies | The apartment or office inside the building |
| Short Address | الرمز المختصر | 8 characters | 4 letters plus the building number, for example RAGI2929 |
Source: Saudi Post (SPL) | Verified: 26 August 2026
Saudi Post calls the four digit locator the secondary number in its English documentation. Absher, Tawakkalna and most online forms label the same field the additional number. They are the same figure, so either label points to the same four digits.
The Short Address is not a postal code and cannot replace one. Its four letters are assigned from the postal code, and its four digits are the building number. RAGI2929 therefore describes building 2929 inside the zone coded RAGI.
A written National Address follows a fixed six part order:
- Building number and street name
- Additional number and district name
- Postal code
- City
Written out, a complete address reads: 2929 Rayhanah Bint Zaid, 8118 Al Arid District, 13337 Riyadh.
Postal Codes for Every City and Governorate
Every town below has its own five digit code. A second code, where shown, is the older PO Box code. It is still used for post office box addresses and on international shipping forms.
Use the National Address code for a delivery address, a bank form or a government registration.

Riyadh District Postal Codes
Riyadh spreads across more than 150 districts and well over a hundred postal zones. No single Riyadh postal code works for the whole city.
The bands follow the city’s growth. Central and older districts such as Al Olaya and Al Malaz sit in the 12xxx range.
The fast growing northern districts including Al Narjis, Al Yasmin, As Sahafah and Al Arid sit in 13xxx. Several southern and eastern neighbourhoods use 14xxx.
| District | Commonly published code | Area of Riyadh |
|---|---|---|
| Al Olaya | 12271 | Central business district |
| Al Malaz | 12629 | Central, near King Saud University |
| Al Murabba | 12613 | Old city centre |
| Ad Dirah | 12395 | Historic centre, near Al Batha |
| Ad Dhubbat | 12626 | Central |
| Al Ghubairah | 12241 | Central south |
| Al Izdihar | 12488 | East central |

Why Riyadh district lists disagree with each other?
If you compare three websites you will often find three different codes for Al Olaya or Al Malaz. This is not simply carelessness on their part.
A Riyadh district is a municipal boundary, not a postal boundary, and the two do not line up. Al Olaya alone spans the 12211 to 12214 range as well as 12271.
Al Malaz spans roughly 12831 to 12838 alongside 12629. Each site picks one member of the range and calls it definitive.
For a courier, a bank form or a government registration, the district code is only a starting point. Take thirty seconds to pull your building’s actual code using one of the methods below.
Jeddah District Postal Codes
Jeddah stretches along roughly eighty kilometres of Red Sea coast and contains more than fifty district codes. Central and southern districts sit mainly in the 22xxx band, while the newer northern and coastal developments sit in 23xxx.
| District | Commonly published code | Area of Jeddah |
|---|---|---|
| Al Balad | 22233 | Historic centre, UNESCO site |
| Al Baghdadiyah | 22231 | Central |
| Al Sharafeyah | 22234 | Central |
| As Sulaymaniyah | 22253 | Central business area |
| Al Aziziyah | 22431 | South central |
| Corniche | 22331 | Waterfront |
| Obhur | 22461 | Northern coastal |
| Al Hamra | 23211 | Central waterfront |
| Al Rawdah | 23435 | North central |
| Al Zahra | 23421 | North central |
| Al Safa | 23452 | East |
| Al Faisaliyah | 23441 | Central |
| Al Hamdaniyah | 23234 | East |
| North Obhur | 23816 | Far north coastal |
Source: compiled from published district listings | Verified: 26 August 2026
Northern Jeddah has seen the most postal zone activity as coastal development continues. Residents of Obhur and the newer northern districts should verify rather than assume.
Makkah and Madinah District Postal Codes
Makkah contains roughly 47 districts. Codes matter particularly during Hajj and Umrah season, when hotel bookings, courier deliveries and logistics converge on a small area.
| Location | Commonly published code |
|---|---|
| Masjid al-Haram area, Makkah | 24231 |
| Al Aziziyah, Makkah | 24246 |
| Arafat | 24271 |
| Mina | 24248 |
| Muzdalifah | 24252 |
| Masjid an-Nabawi area, Madinah | 42311 |
| Quba, Madinah | 42315 |
Madinah is more centralised than Riyadh or Jeddah. The code 42311 covers most central districts around the Prophet’s Mosque.
Dammam, Khobar and Dhahran District Postal Codes
The three cities form one continuous metropolitan area. A wrong code here can route a parcel to a neighbouring city.
| District | Commonly published code | City |
|---|---|---|
| Central Dammam | 34223 | Dammam |
| Al Hussam | 32245 | Dammam |
| Al Faisaliyah | 32271 | Dammam |
| Ash Shatea | 32415 | Dammam |
| Al Khobar city centre | 34714 | Al Khobar |
| Khobar Shamalia (North Khobar) | 34426 | Al Khobar |
| Ath Thuqbah | 34621 | Al Khobar |

How to Find Your Exact Postal Code?
Any published list gives you a district level answer. These five methods return the code registered against your actual building. That is what a bank form or a courier needs.
1. Read the green plate on your building
Every registered building in the Kingdom carries a green National Address plate near the entrance. It shows the building number, street, district and postal code. This is the fastest method and needs no phone or login.
2. Tawakkalna
Open Tawakkalna, go to Services, then select National Address. Your registered address appears automatically against your Iqama, including your postal code, additional number and Short Address.
3. Absher
Log into Absher, open My Services, then General Services, then National Address enquiry. The registered address linked to your ID is displayed with all its components.
4. Saudi Post online and the address map
Visit the SPL National Address service or the National Address map, then drop a pin on your building. The map holds more than 4.5 million registered addresses and reaches remote areas.
5. WhatsApp
Message the Saudi Post virtual assistant on +966 11 289 8888 and choose the National Address option. It replies with your full address as text you can copy straight into a form.
If your building does not appear on the map, the address is not yet registered. Registration through SPL is free. Saudi Post advises visiting the nearest post office when a building number will not resolve.
What Changed on 1 January 2026?
The Transport General Authority now requires every parcel in Saudi Arabia to carry a valid National Address. This covers inbound, outbound and domestic shipments. Delivery companies must refuse any parcel without one.
This matters for anybody ordering online. Couriers including DHL, FedEx, Aramex and SMSA reject non compliant shipments. The field they need is usually the Short Address, not the postal code alone.
Two points are widely misreported. Saudi Post did not introduce a new postal code format in 2026. The nine digit structure has existed for years.
The mandate concerns the National Address being present, not the code changing.
Domestic mail and PO Box correspondence still work on the five digit postal code by itself. The TGA notes that the National Address can be retrieved through Absher, Tawakkalna, Sehhaty and SPL platforms.
Using Your Postal Code on Forms
Different platforms want different parts of the address, which is where most errors happen.
| Where you are entering it | What to provide |
|---|---|
| Amazon.sa and noon | District postal code plus Short Address in the address field |
| Saudi bank account opening | Full National Address, all six components |
| Absher and Muqeem | National Address, synced from SPL |
| International shipping label | 5 digit code on its own line, plus Short Address |
| Aramex, SMSA and DHL | Short Address is the field they route on |
| Iqama renewal and government forms | Registered National Address, not a district reference |
International forms sometimes reject a Saudi postal code. The usual cause is a field expecting letters, as used in Canadian or British postcodes. Saudi codes contain no letters, so a form insisting on them wants your Short Address.
Postal Codes for Expat Home Countries
A large share of postal code searches made from inside Saudi Arabia are for other countries entirely. Residents need their home postal code for remittance forms, family visa paperwork, insurance documents and online orders sent home.
| Country | Format | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pakistan | 5 digits | Lahore 54000, Karachi 74000, Islamabad 44000, Rawalpindi 46000, Peshawar 25000, Faisalabad 38000, Multan 60000 |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the postal code of Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Arabia has no single national postal code, because each district carries its own five digit code. The most widely quoted reference codes are 12271 for Riyadh, 22233 for Jeddah, 24231 for Makkah and 34223 for Dammam.
What is the postal code of Riyadh?
Riyadh’s most quoted code is 12271, covering Al Olaya and the King Fahd District business area. The city spans over a hundred zones across the 11xxx to 14xxx bands, so use your own district code.
What is my postal code in Saudi Arabia?
Open Tawakkalna, tap Services, then National Address, and your registered postal code appears against your Iqama. You can also read it from the green National Address plate beside your building entrance.
Is a ZIP code the same as a postal code in Saudi Arabia?
Yes, ZIP code is simply the American term for the same five digit Saudi postal code. Saudi forms, banks and courier companies treat the two words as interchangeable.
What is the additional number in a Saudi address?
The additional number is a four digit locator that pinpoints your exact building within its district. Saudi Post calls the same field the secondary number, so both labels describe one figure.
Is the Short Address the same as the postal code?
No, they are separate fields and cannot be substituted for one another. The Short Address combines four letters derived from your postal code with your four digit building number, for example RAGI2929.
Do I still need a postal code after the 2026 National Address rules?
Yes, the postal code remains one of the six components of a valid National Address. The Transport General Authority rule from January 2026 concerns address completeness, not the code itself.
Why do websites show different postal codes for the same district?
District boundaries are municipal, while postal codes follow delivery zones, and a single district usually spans several zones. Each website picks one code from that range, which is why lists disagree.
How do I register a National Address in Saudi Arabia?
Registration is free through the Saudi Post portal, where you locate your building on the map and save it. Your details then sync to Absher and Tawakkalna within a short time.
Can I use a PO Box code as my delivery address?
No, a PO Box code routes mail to a post office branch rather than to your building. Couriers delivering to your door need your National Address district code and Short Address instead.
Final Thoughts
Saudi Arabia has shifted from addressing places to addressing buildings. The postal code is now one field in a six part record, not the whole address. That is why a two year old code can pass a form and still fail a delivery.
Anyone who has registered an address will recognise the practical consequence. Your postal code rarely changes. The address held against your Iqama goes stale when you move, and nothing warns you.
A thirty second check in Tawakkalna belongs in the same routine as telling your employer.
